Studies show that US coverage is Israeli-centric. The main bureaus for CNN, Associated Press, Time, etc. are located in Israel and often staffed by Israelis. The son of the NY Times bureau chief is in the Israeli army;"pundit" Jeffrey Goldberg served in the IDF; Wolf Blitzer worked for AIPAC. Because the U.S. gives Israel over $8 million/day - more than to any other nation - we feel it is essential that we be fully informed on this region. Below are news reports to augment mainstream coverage.

Senator Al Franken on Israel

JTA
Israel was not an issue in the Franken-Coleman campaign, but both candidates appeared at a pro-Israel rally at a Minneapolis Jewish community center in January during the Gaza operation. Franken said then that the U.S. relationship with Israel is a “pillar of our foreign policy” and that he would continue to uphold that commitment “as a United States senator.”

“Let us stand together to send a clear message to the Israeli people,” he said. “In this complex and dangerous world, you do not stand alone.”

In a February 2008 interview with the American Jewish World newspaper, Franken talked of his hopes that the U.S. would get more involved in peace efforts in the region, which President Obama has already done in his first six months in office.

"We’re sort of the indispensable power in the Middle East, and in the world, and we have to play a much more active role than we’ve been playing," said Franken. "We kind of know what a two-state solution would look like, we just got to get there."

"We need patient diplomacy and that requires two things: patience and diplomacy. The bottom line is, Israel deserves to exist with neighbors that recognize its right to exist and who have renounced terrorism as a way of achieving political objectives. With Hamas in Gaza, that’s very, very hard right now.”

Back then, Franken also encouraged continued talks with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, as well as talks with the leaders of Syria and Iran.

“As Yitzhak Rabin said, ‘You don’t make peace with your friends, you make peace with your enemies,’ ” Franken said. “And I liked Yitzhak Rabin a lot.”

So far, no new settlement building approved by Netanyahu gov’t, yet construction continues

JTA
While the Netanyahu government has not approved any new settlement construction, even for “natural growth,” enough building plans already have been approved to keep settlement construction going for years, say Israeli critics of the settlements.

Hagit Ofran, who heads Peace Now’s Settlement Watch division, says Netanyahu could go further.

“He could say today that all construction is stopping and we would see no building at all,” Ofran said.

She said some 3,000 housing units are currently under construction using permits granted under the previous government. Settler leaders say that is an inflated figure.

Ofran also said that funding for settlements and their development are part of the recently approved national budget -- including the ongoing construction of several roads and other building sites.

Israeli sub crosses the Egyptian Suez Peninsula

Reuters reported that a Dolphin Israeli submarine crossed the Egyptian Suez Peninsula last month during a Navy drill.

The maneuver was seen as a message to Iran...

The official added that the Dolphin submarine can fire missiles, including nuclear warheads.

Israel cuts off water to Arab Druze towns on hottest day of year

IMEMC, July 4, 2009
The Israeli National Water Company has cut off the water supply to two Arab Druze towns inside Israel. While water cut-offs by Israeli authorities are common within the Occupied Territories of Gaza and the West Bank, they are fairly unheard of within Israel itself.

...The water company makes no provision for the weather in their decisions to cut off water in non-payment cases. Instead, they happened to choose a day (July 1st) that is in the middle of a heat wave, and is in fact the hottest day so far this year.

Ordinary citizens who pay their water fees each month are outraged that the two municipalities have been completely cut off. Kamal Adwan, a resident of one of the towns, told Israeli daily Yediot Ahranoth, "It's not easy to get by without water in this heat. A few have water reservoirs or wells near their houses, others just have to buy bottled mineral water." Another resident, Samah Kayouif, told the Israeli daily that the residents had received no notice of an impending water cutoff, saying, "We woke up in the morning to find there was no water in the pipes. How do you shower? Shave? Go to the bathroom? Never mind just getting a drink. It's impossible to live like this, I had to go to work, but my wife took the kids and drove to her parents' because they have a rainwater reservoir."

UK raises issue of Israel's seizure of Free Gaza ship

Ma'an News, July 4, 2009
Bethlehem - A spokesperson for the United Kingom's foreign secretary has raised the issue of an aid ship seized by Israel's navy with the country's government, according to British news reports.

"We would be concerned if the stories of the Israeli navy boarding the Spirit of Humanity in international waters were true," said a spokesperson for UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband on Saturday.

Noting that the issue of Gaza's legal waters are murky, she still said the country's Foreign Ministry was looking into claims that the takeover by Israel's navy of the ship and her 21-member crew on Tuesday violated international law, according to Sky News...

Meanwhile, several of the six British nationals being held by Israel told the news agency that they were being held in "atrocious conditions" at the prison...

Ishmahil Blagrove, 40, said, "I'm in a cell with 14 of us. The cell is about seven by four. There were just two fans that only covered half of the cell when we got here." "We all screamed and shouted so they gave us a third. It's really hot in here. Everyone is complaining."

Palestinian security forces later identified the woman as Khadija Azzat, 20, from Nablus. She was on her way to the Jordan Valley when the incident occurred... shot in the lower half of the body and taken to Israeli hospital with moderate injuries...

The Israeli daily newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth lamented the incident, saying Azzat’s actions “took place in the midst of a wide-scale effort in recent weeks to ease freedom of movement for the Palestinians in the West Bank.”

The Israeli campaign to ease movement in the West Bank follows ten years of near-total closures and humiliation campaigns and has seen several main checkpoints enlarged and a system of travel corridors made available for Palestinians.

Gaza: UN Expert denounces seizure of aid boat by Israeli forces

UN

GENEVA - The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, Richard Falk, denounced the unlawful naval seizure by an Israeli gunboat on the high seas of a ship carrying medicine and reconstruction material to blockaded people of Gaza.

"This Israeli action implements its cruel blockade of the entire Palestinian population of Gaza, in violation of Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention that prohibits any form of collective punishment directed at an occupied people... Such a pattern of continuing blockade under these conditions amounts to such a serious violation of the Geneva Conventions as to constitute a continuing crime against humanity", added the independent human rights expert.

....21 peace activists on the boat were arrested, held in captivity, and have been charged with 'illegal entry' to Israel even though they had no intention of going to Israel. The group included such prominent figures as the Irish winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Mairead Maguire, and the former American congresswoman Cynthia McKinney. Full story

Amnesty: Israel killed hundreds of unarmed Palestinian civilians

Amnesty Abstract & VIDEO

'Israeli forces killed hundreds of unarmed Palestinian civilians and destroyed thousands of homes in Gaza in attacks which breached the laws of war, Amnesty International concluded in a new report published on Thursday. Operation 'Cast Lead': 22 days of death and destruction...

... The Amnesty International report documents Israel's use of battlefield weapons against a civilian population trapped in Gaza, with no means of escape...

The report shows that Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups fired hundreds of rockets into southern Israel, killing three Israeli civilians, injuring scores... "Such unlawful attacks constitute war crimes and are unacceptable," added Donatella Rovera.

The scale and intensity of the attacks on Gaza were unprecedented. Some 300 children and hundreds of other unarmed civilians who took no part in the conflict were among the 1,400 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.

...Most were killed with high-precision weapons, relying on surveillance drones which have exceptionally good optics, allowing those observing to see their targets in detail. Others were killed with imprecise weapons, including artillery shells carrying white phosphorus ...

Amnesty International found that the victims of the attacks it investigated were not caught in the crossfire during battles between Palestinian militants and Israeli forces, nor were they shielding militants or other military objects...

More than 3,000 homes were destroyed and some 20,000 damaged in Israeli attacks which reduced entire neighbourhoods of Gaza to rubble and left an already dire economic situation in ruins... Full story

Spoil them rotten

Ha'aretz - Gideon Levy
'..... The $2 billion promised with much ceremony at the Sharm el-Sheikh summit about six months ago - of it $900 million from the new America under President Barack Obama - is lying in vaults at the international banks. A senior American diplomat explained a few days ago that his country is not transferring the money "because Israel is objecting," ....

... the siege on Gaza continues at full strength and cruelty. Washington is busy with the fate of the Migron settlement, Israel is busy with the Dudu Topaz case, and the world has lost interest. When there are no terror attacks, there are no Arabs: When Gaza isn't shooting, it is abandoned to its fate. That is the message Israel is sending its imprisoned neighbors: Launch Qassams and we'll take an interest in you, don't launch Qassams and we won't take an interest. Only abducted soldier Gilad Shalit is still reminding us of Gaza's existence: The activists for his release demonstrated again last week. But instead of demonstrating for the release of Palestinian prisoners, they demonstrated for tightening the siege and collective punishment...

The mass experiment on human beings has failed miserably; two years is enough time to determine this. Not one of the siege's aims have been achieved and the damage is only piling up, perhaps for all eternity. Folly and malevolence, a fairly common combination, have melded into one of Israel's most fateful mistakes. Even if we leave aside the moral aspect of the inhumane and illegal siege, it is no longer possible to ignore its stupidity as a policy. Shalit has not been released - no siege is going to free him. Hamas has not fallen - the group is only more firmly establishing its regime. And above all, a new reality is developing before our eyes that is worse for Israel than all its predecessors.

The siege has splintered the Palestinian people even more. This is not the first time Israel has split up the Palestinians: Since 1948 it has been systematically separating Palestinians from Palestinians, dividing and ruling...

Now the next splintering has come along, the most stupid of all: the split between Gaza and the West Bank. While Israel is preventing Gaza from having any connection with the West Bank, it complains that there is no Palestinian partner. While we are strengthening the Hamas regime, thanks to the siege's hardships and the wrongs of Operation Cast Lead, we are lamenting "the Hamastan in Gaza." And what would happen if Israel were to lift the siege, enable the reconstruction and bring Gaza and the West Bank closer together? A huge disaster; a chance for moderation.

Leave aside, then, the moral aspect - it doesn't have any takers in Israel. But what about good sense? What is Israel getting out of the siege, apart from the enjoyment of the other side's suffering and another stage in its disintegration? Yasser Arafat was too strong, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is too weak and now there is a new ray of hope for all the spoilers: The Palestinians are split and there's no one to talk to. ANALYSIS / Loud-mouthed rabbi reflects IDF's religious bent

Ha'aretz
'..... A significant change is occurring within the IDF, and it has not yet been sufficiently analyzed. The face of the army, especially the middle ranks, has become more religious over the last decade. It's not just a matter of counting skullcaps at graduation ceremonies at Training Base 1... The same process is playing itself out in most of the fighting units. As a result the IDF, and not just its chief rabbi, is speaking with a different, more religious voice.

Ronski was appointed by Dan Halutz... who wanted to bring the IDF closer to the sectors of the public that opposed the Gaza disengagement. Now, four years later, the disengagement seems to have pushed religious youth to apply themselves more within the army, in part due to the belief that their influence will be greater from within. Jewish History, Jewish Religon - Israel Shahak
'...' It became apparent to me, as drawing on Talmudic laws governing the relations between Jews and non-Jews, that neither Zionism, including its seemingly secular part, nor Israeli politics since the inception of the State of Israel, nor particularly the policies of the Jewish supporters of Israel in the diaspora, could be understood unless the deeper influence of those laws, and the worldview which they both create and express is taken into account....

...Without a discussion of the prevalent Jewish attitudes to non-Jews, even the concept of Israel as 'a Jewish state', as Israel formally defines itself, cannot be understood...

...the actual danger of Israeli policies based on 'Jewish ideology' remains greater than the danger of policies based on purely strategic considerations....

... In 1962, a part of the Maimonidean Code ...which contains the most basic rules of Jewish faith and practice, was published in Jerusalem in a bilingual edition, with the English translation facing the Hebrew text. The latter has been restored to its original purity, and the command to exterminate Jewish infidels appears in it in full: 'It is a duty to exterminate them with one's own hands.' ... the Hebrew text goes on to specify the prime examples of 'infidels' who must be exterminated: 'Such as Jesus of Nazareth and his pupils, and Tzadoq and Baitos21 and their pupils, may the name of the wicked rot'. Not one 'word of this appears in the English text on the facing page (78a). And, even more significant, in spite of the wide circulation of this book among scholars in the English-speaking countries, not one of them has, as far as I know, protested against this glaring deception...

... Very many non-Jews (including Christian clergy and religious laymen, as well as some marxists from all marxist groups) hold the curious opinion that one way to 'atone' for the persecution of Jews is not to speak out against evil perpetrated by Jews but to participate in 'white lies' about them. The crude accusation of 'antisemitism' (or, in the case of Jews, 'self-hate') against anybody who protests at the discrimination of Palestinians or who points out any fact about the Jewish religion or the Jewish past which conflicts with the 'approved version' comes with greater hostility and force from non-Jewish 'friends of the Jews' than from Jews. It is the existence and great influence of this group in all western countries, and particularly in the USA... which has allowed the rabbis and scholars of Judaism to propagate their lies not only without opposition but with considerable help.... THE PIRATES OF ZION: OBAMA MISSES THE BOAT

Author Alan Sabrosky, Ph.D., formerly at U.S. Army War College, holder of the General of the Army Douglas MacArthur Chair of Research, Marine Corps veteran.
Alan Sabrosky, Intifada

'....It is not just that piracy in any form is commonly viewed as a plague. It is that few principles are so embedded in US tradition as that of the freedom of the seas, and with it the inviolability of US citizens....

...Obama himself has been something of a cipher to Israel ... A test of the new president was clearly in order. And this was that test. The US knew The Spirit of Humanity was en route to Gaza and that Americans were aboard. The US also knew that Israeli gunboats were en route to intercept the relief ship, and that the interception would occur in international waters. The US understood that the Israelis would not simply send their gunboats out and then recall them, absent outside pressure. And once those gunboats surrounded and began assailing the relief ship, the only question was whether they would ram and perhaps sink it, or board and capture it and the people aboard, unless the US intervened.

If Obama seriously meant to change the US role in the region and the dynamics of the conflict, this was the time and place to take a stand. A single call to Netanyahu might have caused the Israelis to abort the attack. A single US destroyer or frigate from the 6th Fleet, with orders to enforce international law and protect The Spirit of Humanity in international waters, thereby safeguarding US citizens, absolutely would have done it. An open encounter with a US warship would inevitably have unpleasant consequences for the Israelis, costing them several gunboats and opening a can of political worms they dare not allow the American public to see — and it is a great pity that did not happen.

But it didn’t. Obama kept quiet, as he did during the Gaza onslaught – perhaps he is writing a book called Profiles in Silence? – the US 6th Fleet did nothing, and the world has the joy of yet another successful Israeli act of piracy and breach of international law. Netanyahu and Lieberman must be laughing. Their prisoners, including American citizens abandoned yet again by their government, are not...

..... If any other country did what Israel has done here and in Gaza, Obama would likely treat it as an act of war, or at least do to it what NATO did to Yugoslavia in the 1990s. But not Israel, not now, and certainly not by Israel’s sitting president pro tempore in the White House. Full story

Israel Kidnaps Peace Boat Crew: Pirates of the Mediterranean

Economist Paul Craig Roberts was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in the Reagan administration and an editor and columnist at the Wall Street Journal.
Paul Craig Roberts, CounterPunch
'On June 30, the government of Israel committed an act of piracy when the Israeli Navy in international waters illegally boarded the “Spirit of Humanity,” kidnapped its 21-person crew from 11 countries, including former US Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and Nobel Laureate Mairead MaGuire, and confiscated the cargo of medical supplies, olive trees, reconstruction materials, and children’s toys that were on the way to the Mediterranean coast of Gaza......

Gaza has been described as the “world’s largest concentration camp.” It is home to 1.5 million Palestinians who were driven by force of American-supplied Israeli arms out of their homes, off their farms, and out of their villages so that Israel could steal their land and make the Palestinian land available to Israeli settlers.

...As President Obama has called for humanitarian aid to be sent to Gaza, and as the International Red Cross has damned the inhumanity of Israel’s blockade of Gaza, the question that immediately comes to mind is why did not the United States send sufficient US Navy escort to see the “Spirit of Humanity” safely through international waters to Gaza? We send ships against Somalian pirates, why not against Israeli ones?

We all know the answer... Israel owns the US Congress and President Obama. Israel even has an Israeli citizen and former member of the Israeli Defense Forces as the Chief-of-Staff in Obama’s White House. Israel owns millions of American “Christian Zionists” and “rapture evangelicans.” When it comes to Israel, the American government is a puppet state. It does what it is told...

Israel, of course, will get away with a mere act of piracy. After all, Israel has been getting away with its war crimes and violations of international law for 60 years. If the UN tries to do anything, the US will veto it, as the US has done for decades...

The same week that “our” government in Washington told the Governor of California “not one red cent,” President Barak Obama handed over $2.775 billion to Israel.

... the handover to Israel of the unemployed Americans’ tax dollars took place in a “tiny Capitol room” to which members of the press were denied access...

Unlike every other recipient of US military largesse, Israel is permitted to bypass the Pentagon and to deal directly with US suppliers. Consequently, the Israel Lobby’s influence multiplies, because military suppliers fight for Israel in congressional committees in order to get Israel’s business...

...There’s no money for California, or for Americans’ health care, or for the several million Americans who have lost their homes and are homeless, because Israel needs it...

Israel to deport peace activists sailing to Gaza

Ynet
'Israel is planning to deport within the next few days the 21 peace activists who arrived on a boat from Cyprus with the intention of entering the Gaza Strip. An Israeli Navy unit boarded their boat and escorted it to Ashdod port. Immigration police will transport the detained activists to Ben Gurion Airport, and from there they will be deported out of the country.

...Among the peace activists are two Israeli-American citizens, and 19 others, including five from Ireland [including Nobel peace laureate], three from Britain, five from Bahrain, three Americans [including former US Congresswoman], and Danish, Jordan, and Yemenite citizens.

.... uncle of Houida Araf, one of the Israeli-American citizens on the Gaza-bound boat said, "We haven't managed to get a hold of her, and we haven't received any information. We are worried. They can't deport her, and we will fight for this to the very end.

"She has an Israeli passport. She is a citizen of the state, and Israel has no right to detain her. What for, exactly? For trying to help people who have no food? In the past there were a few regimes that did this, the apartheid in South Africa, for instance. Is this the regime Israel wants to be associated with?"... Full story

US renews Israel loan guarantees

Ma'an
'The US has renewed a program of massive loan guarantees to Israel in spite of an ongoing dispute about the construction of illegal settlements in the West Bank.... the program allows Israel to sell bonds and take out loans with the backing of the US. The nine billion dollar program was originally approved in 2002 to help Israel cope with an economic downturn.

According to Israeli economist Shir Hever ...the loan guarantees are actually contradictory to the US’ diplomatic stance on settlements.

“The US is allowing its money to be used to violate international law,” Hever told Ma’an in a phone interview. “The US cannot claim to be an impartial arbiter,” because of its overall economic support for Israel.

Hever also said that the issue is much larger than loan guarantees... Israel is also the number one recipient of direct US aid, for example receiving three billion dollars per year in military aid, which it can use to buy weapons from Israeli companies, whereas other countries are required to buy from the US.

Because US guarantees make it possible for Israel to borrow money at lower interest rates, Israel’s government has prepared a budget whose size is “unparalleled in its history,” ...

“Israel has been able to get away with things no other country would,” Hever said, referring to Israel’s recent wars, which would have “driven any other country to bankruptcy.”... Full story
