Israeli prosecutors on Sunday ordered police to investigate a Nazareth city councilor for incitement to racism, according to news reports.
Upper Nazareth City Councilor Ze'ev Hartman had in April responded to a question about his personal greetings for Israel's Independence Day by wishing "all the Arabs to disappear," the Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz reported.
The outburst occurred when councilors were asked to record personal greetings on video to mark the ceremony, and Hartman chose the anti-Arab line as his, the paper said.
According to Haaretz the Israeli cameraman, reportedly stunned by the racist statement, asked Hartman if he was being serious, to which he replied, "absolutely serious."
