Amnesty calls for Israel to release anti-wall activists

Amnesty International launched a letter-writing campaign aiming to secure the release of three Palestinian activists engaged in the struggle to bring down Israel's separation wall in Palestinian areas.

The campaign, launched last week, asks Amnesty supporters the world over to write a letter to Brigadier General Avihai Mendelblit, Military Advocate General at the Israeli Defense Forces.

The website has an automatic send function and a form letter, which supporters can fill out and add to, then send directly to the military official.

The letter refers to the three men, Jamal Juma, Abdallah Abu Rahma and Mohammed Othman, as "human rights activists who have been campaigning for years against the fence/wall by raising awareness about its negative impact on Palestinians, organizing grassroots opposition to it and peacefully demonstrating against it."

The letter goes on to remind Mendelblit that "in 2004 the International Court of Justice issued a unanimous advisory opinion stating that the construction of the wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territories is contrary to international law and that sections already built there should be dismantled."...
