US government to use Israeli firm for rural wireless network - $150 million

[Israeli company] Alvarion has signed its biggest contract ever, to supply WiMax wireless communication equipment for a project sponsored by the United States government. The project's goal is to build a WiMax wireless network for 6 million residents in an area spanning 17 states and 546 rural communities.

Alvarion's contract will be worth $100 million to $150 million...

This and similar projects are being financed by the American government via loans and grants, and most of the country's big telecommunications companies are vying for a piece of the action...

Alvarion CEO Tzvika Friedman figures this contract will be worth far more to Alvarion than its pure financial value, and that this project will lead to additional contracts from other companies building wireless networks in rural areas... . Full story
