What will Israel do with the flotilla detainees?

Ma’anBefore the Freedom Flotilla set sail for Gaza, Israeli authorities erected tents at Ashdod port to be used as detention centers for the peace activists, the Israeli daily Maariv reported Monday.

After the fierce attack by Israeli navy commandos on the aid ships Monday morning killing at least 10 and injuring dozens, Israel decided to divide activists into two categories. The first includes those who have not put up resistance; they will be detained inside tents. Those who refuse will be taken by to Ashkelon prison before they are interrogated and sent back to their home country or any country they choose.

The second category includes activists whom Israel accuses of resisting and attacking navy commandos. Those, according to Maariv, will be tried as criminals and could be detained indefinitely, Maariv reported.

Rights groups have expressed concern over the continued detention of 480 passengers from the ships, reportedly moved to the Ela Prison in Israel's south.

The Israeli daily Haaretz said Tuesday that 50 of the passengers had been voluntarily repatriated to their home countries, while some 629 had refused to be deported and would remain in Israeli prison until the nation decided what, if any, legal action would be taken.........  Full story
