Maan News Agency - Local and international rights organizations slammed Monday the Israeli decision to sentence Palestinian rights leader in Haifa, Ameer Makhoul, to nine years in prison, calling the move political.
Makhoul is a prominent political activist and the general director the Union of Arab Community-Based Associations (Ittijah) and other associations uniting Palestinian and Arab citizens of Israel. He was detained in May on charges of espionage and assistance to the enemy in a time of war, to which he plead guilty.
The charges carry a maximum sentence of life.
Amnesty International, in a statement sent Monday, urged the Israeli authorities to "end their harassment of Palestinian human rights activists," and condemned the prison term handed down to Makhoul....
