EU renews permits for Nativity Church deportees

European Union foreign ministers will extend residence permits for Palestinians deported after the 2002 siege of the Church of the Nativity, the EU announced on Tuesday.

The EU foreign ministers made the decision at a meeting on common foreign policy in Brussels, the sixth time the permits have been renewed.

In 2002 European states agreed to take in 13 Palestinian men as part of a deal that ended a weeks-long standoff at the Bethlehem church, where Palestinian fighters took refuge from an Israeli military incursion. Other fighters involved in the incident were sent into exile in Gaza, where most remain. Full story
