Rights group backs Hamas stance on UN report

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) on Friday welcomed Hamas' decision to endorse the United Nations Fact Finding Mission on Gaza and the movement's purported commitment to conduct effective investigations.

"Hamas' decision to conduct investigations is welcome," the PCHR said in a statement. "It is a first step towards upholding victims' rights and enforcing the rule of the law."

... On Thursday, the de facto Foreign Ministry in Gaza announced, "Although we do not agree with certain aspects of his report, we intend to act on his recommendation and to carry out our own investigation into any alleged crimes committed by members of the resistant movements in Gaza."

... PCHR stressed that Israel is also under an obligation to conduct investigations but, to date, has not cooperated with the mission, "perpetuating a cycle of impunity which has been a consistent feature of Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land."

On 12 October, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu vowed that Israeli soldiers and leaders would never stand trial for war crimes allegedly committed during the operation, which left around 1,400 Palestinians dead. Full story
