Two Palestinians arrested en route to Egypt

Egyptian authorities thwarted an attempt by two Palestinians to sneak into Egypt on Thursday, according to the defendants being held in Rafah in an interview with Ma'an.

"I decided to escape the difficult situation under which Gaza is living," said Mohammad Hamdi Al-I'jlah, 32, from an Egyptian police station in Rafah, near the Gaza-Egypt border.

According to Salem Ismail Al-I'jlah, the other detainee, "I snuck into Egypt through one of the tunnels because I was unable to travel to Rafah and needed medical treatment at one of the Egyptian hospitals." Salem is an ambulance driver and was injured during the Israeli assault....

Egypt, along with Israel, has maintained a near-total blockade of the Strip by land and sea since June 2007, and Palestinians are generally banned from traveling. However in a rare exception this week Egypt opened its crossing for thousands of travelers. Full story
