Israeli court extends detentions of [Palestinian-Israelis] Makhoul, Said

Bethlehem - Ma'an/Agencies - The Petah Tikva Magistrate's Court extended the remand of prominent Palestinian leaders in Israel Amir Makhoul and Omar Said by five days, Israeli media reported.

Makhoul, who heads the umbrella organization for Palestinian associations in Israel Ittijah, was detained from his home at night on suspicion of espionage and contact with a foreign agent, Israeli media revealed after a military gag order was lifted late Sunday evening.

He has yet to receive access to his lawyer.

A remand hearing for Said, member of the Palestinian political party Balad in Israel, also took place on Wednesday, the Israeli daily Yedioth Ahronoth reported, who has also remanded into custody until next week. Said was detained on 24 April.

Palestinian, international and Israeli Members of Knesset, political figures, human rights activists and other supporters gathered in protest before First Instance Court at Petah Tikva.
