Settlers attack elderly Palestinian man in East Jerusalem
Ma'an
A 59-year-old Palestinian man was hurt in an attack by a mob of Israeli settlers in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of East Jerusalem on Saturday, Ma'an has learned.
Witnesses said the elderly man, Khamis Al-Ghawi, was harshly beaten by the assailants. He was also arrested by Israeli forces, although it was not immediately clear why.
Women and children were among dozens injured earlier in Sheikh Jarrah after a group of violent settlers pelted families with stones and empty glass bottles, witnesses said.
Clashes erupted after bottles hit children attending a local summer camp. Foreign activists in the area attempted to defend the residents while Israeli forces fired tear gas at the crowd and covered the withdrawal of the setters.
Meanwhile in an apparently separate incident, a fight between Palestinians and Israeli settlers in the same area was reported by the Hebrew-language newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth.
It was reported that an Israeli man was lightly injured in that incident, and that he was evacuated to a hospital.
Shortly thereafter, a Palestinian was arrested by Israeli forces "on suspicion that he threw stones with the intention of harming Jews." Full story
