Ma'an News rebuts Israeli statement regarding legality of settlements

Israel’s two central obligations under the Road Map were to recognize the emergence of a Palestinian state, and to halt settlement construction. Israel reaffirmed its commitment to the Road Map in 2007 in Annapolis and in 2009 when Benjamin Netanyahu was elected.

The statement claimed Israel “went considerably beyond its obligations under existing agreements” by unilaterally withdrawing from the Gaza Strip and all the settlements there in 2005. There were 9,000 Israeli settlers evacuated from Gaza. Since the evacuation the settler population in the West Bank has grown by 32,500 people.
