Al-Bustan committee calls demolition plans "ethnic clensing"

The demolition orders delivered to Silwan-area homes is akin to ethnic cleansing and a dangerous precedent to set, said Jerusalem Affairs representative Ahman Ar-Rwaidi Friday.

On November 11, 2004, in an official letter to the head of the Department of Building Inspection, City Engineer Uri Shitreet ordered the clearing of the Palestinian homes from the Al-Bustan area. The order, if carried out would have seen the demolition of 88 homes. Residents appealed the order, which was part of a Jerusalem city plan that would see Al-Bustan turned into a park. In 2008 the appeal was rejected.

“The committee tasked with defending the quarter prayed Friday with the residents of Al-Bustan in an effort to show support to the families who worry daily about whether they will return from work homeless,” Ar-Rwaidi said.
